Faith Requires Foundations!
Who is God?
Time is a parameter created by God. You see, God is eternal, meaning there’s no point in time where you can point to an origin of God. He just is. In fact, when introducing Himself to Moses, He refers to Himself as “I AM” (Exodus 3:14). Now, God created the foundation of everything we see today. The Bible opens up in its first verse saying “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Of course, this doesn’t mean God created the disorder we see in creation today, rather, when God made everything, it was good. It’s humanity which is responsible for the corruption we see later on.
God is by function, perfect. The Bible frequently calls God “holy.” Now, to be holy, means to be “separate.” He is separate from sin, mistakes, wickedness, unrighteousness, and the list goes on… In fact, the Bible says “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5).
Who is Jesus?
In order to facilitate any discussion of bringing individual humans to eternal safety and relationship with God, we’d need a cosmic representative. This representative would need to be morally perfect and yet human to represent us. That’s where Jesus comes in. Over 2000 years ago, God took the form of a human being, we call Him Jesus Christ. God came to Earth in the form of a human being born of a Jewish woman, the blessed Mother Mary. Jesus never sinned since He is divine (2 Corinthians 5:21). That doesn’t mean He avoided sinners. On the contrary, Jesus was criticized by religious people at that time for associating with sinners, prostitutes, but Christ’s response was “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick” (Matthew 9:12).
Throughout the Gospel narratives, Jesus Christ calls people to have a relationship with God, to have a relationship with Him. In fact, He says “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
Why Do We Need Help?
When God created our ancestors, He offered them all the trees except one, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He warned that eating from that tree would bring danger. But humans chose otherwise. By deciding to define good and evil for ourselves and turning away from God’s design, we fractured that perfect relationship and invited sin, evil, and death into the world.
You only need to glance at history and see the human track record has for the most part has been rejection of God. Violence, immorality, and sin animates much of human history. And the Bible says, this plague of sin has tormented humanity ever since we first chose disobedience. Sin, by definition, separates one from God. Romans 3:23 of the Bible says “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Only Christ is without sin and is worthy to be our Saviour.
Why Did Jesus Come?
In 1 John 3:8, the answer to why Jesus came was “to destroy the devil’s work.” Sin has separated humanity from God’s ideal plan for them. Christ showed us what righteousness looks like, experienced our struggles and overcame them, did mighty miracles to prove He is God in the flesh, and eventually died on the cross, experiencing hell on Earth so we can experience Heaven.
Jesus also healed the sick and demonstrated the Kingdom of God. It says in Acts 10:38, that Jesus was “doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil.” Part of becoming a child of God means enjoying His kingdom’s benefits here in this life.
The wages for our sin is death (Romans 6:23). That means that you ought to be paid in eternal death for your sin, but, that’s because Christ died on your behalf, you can experience Christ’s eternal life. Furthermore, Christ didn’t stay dead, He overcame death through miraculously resurrecting three days and three nights after His crucifixion. That means he defeated death. The only way to defeat death was to die and to come back to life and that’s what Christ did.
What We Need to Do...
Believe. You’ve got to trust and believe what Christ has done for you. The Bible says “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). You can’t depend on your works to get into heaven. You’ve got to trust in the work of Jesus by placing your faith in Him and ask God for forgiveness so that you can be reconciled with God. He loves you and promises to forgive you of all your sins if you place your faith in Him.
Salvation requires trust and obedience because the Bible talks about a spiritual law that governs whom our spirits belong to, “Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?” (Romans 6:16). When our first ancestors disobeyed God but trusted in the devilish serpent that tempted them to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they surrendered their authority to a wicked spiritual force. To opt out of that demonic leadership, a believer has to trust and obey God’s plan for salvation, namely what Christ did for you on the cross and His resurrection.
How to Live Holy?
You’re not alone in your battle against sin. Jesus promised a helper (John 14:16), His name is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God and helps us in our struggles. The Holy Spirit lives in every believer, when you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and your Saviour, He is united to your spirit. We know what is right and wrong because He convicts us of any unrighteousness and helps us if we follow Him. He also speaks to us through His Word when we read the Bible and helps us understand God better.
How Can I Grow?
Think of food. Is there a day that goes by where you’re not eating? I hope not. If a child wants to grow, they ought to eat well, they ought to sleep well, etcetera. Likewise, if you want your spiritual self to grow, you’ve got to consistently read God’s Word, be joined to a church (we can help with that if needed), continue in prayer, worship God, etc…
The Lord Jesus spoke some strange but captivating words, He told us to “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). Being a Christian isn’t light work, you’ve got to deny certain things, certain temptations, certain habits. Don’t forget Jesus, don’t forget His love for you or His calling for you. He wants the best for you, but that takes trust. And you won’t regret trusting God.
How Do I Share the Gospel?
It’s pivotal that one shares the gospel once one believes. When you care about people, you want them to enjoy the best just as you enjoy the best. If you found the best restaurant with the fanciest food, would you not share its name with your friends? Likewise, knowing Jesus brings eternal life and we want people to enjoy eternal life. Furthermore, Christ commanded us to “go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).
